Patricia Shaw LLB(Hons), LLM, FRSA, is CEO of Beyond Reach Consulting Limited based in the UK but advises organisations internationally on Responsible AI (AI/data ethics, policy, governance, standards), and Corporate Digital Responsibility. Beyond Reach helps develop AI/Data ethics strategy, designs, and implements AI/data ethics public policy engagement, bespoke AI/data ethics governance frameworks, provides expert advisor services, and curates AI/data ethics Advisory Boards. In short, providing a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to AI and Data governance from the top down and bottom up, to intentionally create ecosystem change and deliver on the impact economy.

With 20 years’ experience as a lawyer in technology, regulatory and government affairs, Patricia has expertise in data, financial services, public sector (Health- and EdTech), and smart cities. Through her consultancy, Patricia supports the delivery of ‘ethics by design’ across the whole AI lifecycle to build trust with customers, industry, and wider society and develop organisational capability, competence, and culture internally.

Patricia sits on the UK’s Digital Catapult Ethics Committee and Advisory Board which has been dedicated to its Machine Intelligence Garage AI incubator, the IEEE’s ECPAIS (now known as “CertifAIEd”) ethics expert advisory panel, and IEEE’s standards programmes P7003 (algorithmic bias), P7010.1 (human wellbeing and sustainability concerning AI) and P2247.4 (adaptive learning systems). She is Chair of the Trustee Board of the Society for Computers and Law, Director of Women Leading in AI, Director of the International Technology Law Association (iTechLaw) and is Chair of iTechlaw’s AI Committee, Director of International Federation of Computer Law Associations (IFCLA). She is also a Fellow of ForHumanity working on Independent Audit of AI Systems, a Fellow of Corporate Digital Responsibility, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufacturing and Commerce (RSA) and was previously on the RSA’s Advisory Board for the ‘Power over Information’ project which contributed to the work of the Online Safety Bill. Patricia is also a member of the Open Banking Consumer Expert Group and the Financial Innovation Lab’s Transforming Data Network, both based in England.

Since May 2023, Patricia now also sits on the Editorial Board of Innovatus: A Journal on Computing Technology Innovations.

Patricia was listed on the 2021 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics™, named on Computer Weekly’s longlist as one of the Most Influential Women in UK Technology in 2021 and in 2022, and was appointed an IEEE AI Ethics Maestro - a title only give to three people in the world – in October 2021.
